Deadline for OGS and SSHRC October 26, 2016

from the Graduate Program Director,

Hello all,

The season is upon us for incoming or continuing PhD. students to apply for funding from SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) and OGS (Ontario Graduate Scholarships) for 2017-18.

All applications for either or both will be due in the History Grad Program office on Wednesday October 26, 2016.

Please read the instructions carefully, even if you think you know what to do.

The procedure will be the same again this year as last, but last year there were painful snags for some. I want very much to avoid that this time around.

Parts of the application (notably the project statement) are the same for both SSHRC and OGS, but there are some pages at the beginning that are NOT the same for both.

You can apply just to SSHRC, or just to OGS, or you can apply to both.

        For SSHRC:   http://gradstudies.yorku.ca/current-students/student-finances/funding-awards/sshrc/
Go to the SSHRC Portal and complete the full application,
Including the 2 pp. “Program of Study”
Print out and submit to Karen.

        For SSHRC and OGS:
                Complete the SSHRC application
AND Part A, Student Profile of the OGS form.
Print out and submit all the forms to Karen.

        For OGS:  http://gradstudies.yorku.ca/current-students/student-finances/funding-awards/ogs/
Complete the full OGS application, Part A and Part B.
Part B includes the “Proposal of study” 2 pp.
Print out and submit to Karen.

A new regulation this year concerns eligibility for OGS. Students currently in PhD. years 4-6 may not apply for funding in 2017-18. In other words, students in PhD. 5 and 6 are not eligible to hold an OGS.

Support for writing applications:
These external grants is very competitive, and it often takes successful candidates more than one try.
If this is new for you or if you have preliminary questions, please come by the office and speak with me or Karen. If you don’t find me readily, send me an email and I’ll happily make an appointment to meet you.

We will hold an applications-in-progress workshop,  October 17, 1:00-2:30 pm in the Department Common Room Vari 2183. Please come with a draft of your “Program/Proposal of study”, and we will workshop these in small groups. Writing a project proposal is a genre in itself, and it helps a lot to practice and get feedback from fellow students and from faculty who have read a lot of these statements.
